Nebraska MEDS is a coalition of state and community partners dedicated to educating patients about safe disposal of prescription and over-the-counter medications. The coalition was formed in response to studies by the U.S. Geological Survey and others that found traces of pharmaceutical and personal care products in drinking water supplies across the United States.
Founded in 2016 and funded by a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust, Nebraska MEDS implements educational efforts and supports a pharmacy-based medication disposal program utilizing the Sharps Compliance TakeAway Environmental Return System. The program promotes safe medication disposal by allowing patients to turn in expired and unused medications at participating pharmacies.
The mission of the Nebraska MEDS Coalition is to educate consumers regarding safe ways to dispose of medications to better safeguard the environment and protect public health. The goals of the drug disposal project include:
decreasing pharmaceutical waste
preventing harm to the environment
protecting water quality
averting accidental ingestion
avoiding use of unwanted medications by unauthorized persons
We work with around 300 pharmacies across Nebraska where anyone can properly dispose of their unused or expired medication. There’s no catch—it’s 100% free for both pharmacies and consumers to participate. Nebraska is one of the first states to start a program like this, and we’re proud to raise awareness about this critical resource.
